Clinical Background

Leland is a clinical developmental psychologist and psychoanalyst with practice experience in the Midwest, East and West coasts. He was awarded his master’s degree and doctorate from Purdue University with specialties in clinical psychology and human development. Following an additional six years of training, he was certified to practice psychoanalysis by the American Institute for Psychoanalysis of the Karen Horney Institute and Clinic.. Leland served as a Senior National Institute of Mental Health Fellow, and participated in advanced studies with Erik Erikson, Lawrence Kohlberg, and Herman Witkin. He has additional certifications in Stress Management, Time-Limited Psychotherapy, yoga, and post-doctoral training in neuropsychological assessment.

Academic Background

Leland held various academic and administrative appointments at the University of Illinois, the University of Pennsylvania, City University of New York, Teachers College, Columbia University, the New School for Social Research, the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology, Rutgers University, the California School of Professional Psychology. and the California Institute of Integral Studies. Among administrative posts, Leland was Research Director at the University of Illinois Child Development Laboratory, Chair of the Department of Clinical Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies, and Dean of the School of Professional Psychology at the same school. More recently, he was a board member for the California Psychological Internship Council (CAPIC) . Currently he is a member of the International Association of Neuropsychoanalysis, a life member of the American Psychological Association, a life member of the American Association of University Professors, and other professional groups. Leland authored four books and more than forty articles in peer-reviewed journals. He is author of the Music Apperception Test and Emeritus Professor of Clinical Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco and a faculty member at the American Institute for Psychoanalysis in New York City.
