I’m Doctor Leland, a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst, in San Francisco and Petaluma, California with fifty years of experience.

I foster growth and development by meeting you where you are, and taking you where you wish to be.

Each person is individual, one of a kind, whose talents, circumstances of life, family, and history are unique. Body, mind, and spirit are interdependent.

Each person has value and purpose. Lifespan change effects everyone. Mature age differs from midlife, midlife from youth, and youth from childhood. Life experience, possibility, and challenge change with age.

No cookie-cutter approach fits all. I foster growth and development through a holistic lifespan approach to therapy based on decades of clinical practice and teaching. My clients seek self-knowledge, firm identity, clear purpose, and meaning in life.

My Style

I am a clinical developmental psychologist, Certified Psychoanalyst and faculty member at the American Institute for Psychoanalysis (NYC), and a Fellow of the American Academy of Clinical Psychology. Find more about my professional background in the “about” section of this website.

The Whole You

I balance logical, rational analysis with intuition.

Personal history and culture

I weigh the importance of personal history and culture with current life reality and demands.

Big Picture, Small Details

I attend to big picture themes and small details.

Dream Interpretation

I give weight to the inner world, dreams, symbolism, and fantasy.

Always unique to you

I adapt my approach to the person and situation.

Long Term Visions

I engage inquiry and wonder.

As a teacher and supervisor,

I integrate theory and application with attention to individual life style based on client history and culture. I guide fledgling and experienced therapists to new perspectives and interventions.

As a researcher and author,

I appraise the lifespan from infancy through mature age with attention to individual differences and life paths. I have researched infancy, twins, cognitive development, executive judgment, values, beliefs, dreams, neuropsychology, and culture. I have written and edited books on human development and psychological assessment.

As a person,

I have been around the block. I am mature enough to have navigated the major milestones of life. I know life’s pitfalls and stumbling blocks, so I have learned compassion and humor from experience.

I practice online and offline.
